If you suffer from chronic back pain, then you know how debilitating it can be. If you are looking for an effective way to relieve that pain, you may be interested in decompression therapy/traction from our team at Hampstead, Sneads Ferry, and Topsail Physical Therapy. In this article, we’ll go over more about what this treatment is and how it works to help you decide if you want to give it a try.

Decompression Therapy/Traction

First, one of the most common causes of back pain is excessive pressure on the spinal discs, which are gel-like pads that act as cushions between the vertebrae. When these discs are under such pressure, that strain can transfer to the spinal cord and nerves, resulting in pain in the back and elsewhere. Spinal decompression therapy/traction is designed to do just what it sounds like — alleviate that pressure and allow your spinal discs to relax into their proper shape.

In a spinal decompression therapy/traction session, you will lay down on a specially designed medical table equipped with supports for various portions of the spine, as well as computerized motors that will move the various sections as needed. One of our care providers will fit you with a harness that straps around your pelvis and another around your trunk, then adjust the table and computer settings to provide customized treatment. Once activated, the table’s sections will slowly move apart from one another, creating a gentle stretch on your spine that alleviates the pressure on your compressed discs and thus eases the pain that compression is causing.
